Simile


Similes are comparisons that show how two things that are not alike in most ways are similar in one important way. Similes are a way to describe something. Authors use them to make their writing more interesting or entertaining.

Similes use the words “as” or “like” to make the connection between the two things that are being compared.

Examples:

1. Playing chess with Ashley is like trying to outsmart a computer.

2. His temper was as explosive as a volcano.

The simile pretty as a picture:
  Her little girl is very attractive.
  She only has a picture of her little girl.
  Her little girl likes to color pretty pictures.

6.   During the family crisis, Tim was as sturdy as an oak; everyone depended on him.
The simile as sturdy as an oak:
  Tim had a meltdown during his crisis.
  Tim was strong and reliable for everyone in the family.
  Tim was not helpful.

7.  Mom was as mad as a hornet when I broke her favorite lamp.
The simile as mad as a hornet:
  Mom didn't notice the lamp was broken.
  Mom was extremely upset.
  Mom thought it was funny.

8.   Eating the raw meat made Timothy as sick as a dog.
The simile as sick as a dog:
  Timothy felt very ill.
  Timothy felt well.
  Timothy felt strong.

9.  After sitting at the beach all day, Cathy was as red as a lobster.
The simile as red as a lobster:
  Cathy was sick.
  Cathy was sunburned.
  Cathy was cold.

10.  She was as calm as a millpond because she knew the chapter for the test inside and out.
The simile as calm as a millpond.
  She was not calm at all.
  She was very calm.
  She was swimming in a lake.
