Types of Paragraphs

Module 4 - Lesson 3

Grade 9

Paragraphs can be developed in a number of different ways. For example:

  • A DESCRIPTIVE PARAGRAPH describes a process or a sequence of events, or the characteristics or structure of something.

  • A NARRATIVE PARAGRAPH is also descriptive, but tends to give background information, that is, an account or description of past events perhaps.

  • An EXPLANATORY PARAGRAPH provides information.

  • An INTRODUCTORY PARAGRAPH sets the scene and outlines what is going to follow.

  • A PERSUASIVE PARAGRAPH tries to convince the reader about something and may make recommendations.

  • The FINAL PARAGRAPH brings an assignment to a conclusion.
